"Granddaughter"

Chapter 1
Zoom Me

By L. Kalere

she's a cutey-patootie
a fish-cracker hound
her Dad's huggy-buggy
her Mom's royal crown

she's bubbles in a bathtub
a scrappy short stack
a friend to her Buddy
a duck's noisy quack

she's strawberry shortcake
with whipped cream on top
she's a tot with a tater
no jellybean flop

she's a firecracker's bang
a spark in the room
a show stopping diva
now call me, let's Zoom

Chapter 2
Long Distance Love

By L. Kalere

Ellen hugged her granddaughter and felt comforted by tiny arms squeezing back at her waist.

"It's okay Grandma, I'll Facetime you."

"Sure honey, you do that."

She watched the slight frame walk away holding onto her Mommy's hand; then closed the door before the lump in her throat gave way to sobs.

Chapter 3
Sovereign Rule

By L. Kalere

sparkling crown jewels
of gold ruby and sapphire~
I trumpet thy fame

scrumptious fruity fares
from plump berries, sunned citrus~
I safeguard thy flame

 soft bosomed pillows
molded in wee beastie form~
I announce thy claim

Royal Gummy Bears
King of the Land of Candy~
I herald thy name

Author Notes Gummy Bears, made by Haribo, originated in Germany in 1920; their inspiration came from trained bears seen at street festivals.
Technical note: According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary: scrumptious has 2 syllables; sparkling has 3 syllables, and; jewel can have either 1 or 2.

Chapter 4
Two Hearts

By L. Kalere

from two hearts came one
with purity so sublime~
steeled hearts did succumb

Author Notes Thanks to Sarah Christian from FanArt, it capture my granddaughter's spirit.

Chapter 5
A Fool for Candy

By L. Kalere

candy, candy, everywhere
in the store, in my hair
talking 'bout it makes me drool
Mom sez I'm a sweet-tooth fool
crazed for candy, don't you doubt it
here's my favorites, read about it

M&Ms in every hue
red ones, brown ones, blue ones too
stuck a green one up my nose
bad idea, I suppose
trip to ER was my price to pay
but sneezed it out along the way

bears and worms are critter Gummys
mice and spiders in my tummy
beneath my bed they got so hairy
fed them all to cousin Larry
freaked my mom, was so funny
got no allowance, got no money

no more time for poems or prose
so take a breath, 'cause here it goes

Turkish Taffy, Twizzlers, Twix
Ring Pops, Pop Rocks, Pixy Stix
Starbursts, Sweet Tarts, Swedish Fishes
Heath Bars, Hearts, Hershey's Kisses
Air Heads, Nerds, Red Hots, Humbugs
Gumdrops, Goobers, Smarties, Milk Duds

stop right now, ain't feelin' so good
ate too much candy, more than I should
what's happening to me, I haven't a clue
my belly is aching, please be the flu
I learned my lesson, shared it with you
candy's just dandy, but too much is taboo

Author Notes I wrote this for my 7 yr old Granddaughter. She loved it so much that she started asking questions about rhyming and rhythm, and came up with her own little poems. After I wrote a family story about witches, she wrote her own story and made a folder to keep it in. She asked her mom and dad to write their stories, and she put them in the folder too. I hope this is just the beginning of a life-long journey for all of us.

Chapter 6
Cornelius the Easter Bunny

By L. Kalere

This is a tale about Cornelius, a big and fluffy bunny
whose ears were long and pink, and just a wee bit funny.

One ear drooped down, and covered his left eye
the right one stood upright and reached up...oh so high.

He knew that he was special, or so his mother said
but other bunnies laughed at him, then thumped him on the head.

The bullies made him scared, and he became tongue-tied
so Cornelius hopped back home, and in his room he cried.

Easter Day was coming soon, and Cornelius had a gig
To hide the eggs for children, and for him this job was big.

So he tucked his special ears beneath a big straw hat
filled his basket full of eggs, was nervous as a cat.

The children got excited when Cornelius came in sight
he was a gorgeous bunny, his smile so big and bright.

His fur was soft and cuddly, snow white and fluffy too
his nose was wet and twitchy, like early morning dew.

All at once his hat flew off and one ear stood up stiff
the other poked him in the eye, Cornelius cried, sniff, sniff.

A little boy named Alex saw poor Cornelius cry
and took him by the paw, then asked the bunny why.

All eyes on him, he shook and quaked and closed his eyes in fright
but the children just surrounded him and hugged Cornelius tight.

There was laughter...to be sure, but not meant to make fun
the children all held hands and round and round they spun.

Cornelius joined the laughter, now knew his mom was right ~
to be different was a good thing, then he squeezed himself real tight.
