Conversation with a houseplant.

My Link With the Great Beyond

by BethShelby

Yes, I know you think it’s dying. You’re wrong. It’s just pouting. It does that every few days. It’s a very demanding plant. Much like my mom, for whom it must continue living. It’s been around since 1995 when she died. It appeared at her memorial service with no card telling me who to thank.

It’s how I communicate with her these days. It says all the things she would say if she was here. Like , “I don’t mean to be critical, but please pay attention. There are things you are starting to let go around here. You need to get your head away from that computer screen, and take a look at what’s happening to your house. Don’t you think it could use some attention?”

“Do I need to remind you that life matters? All living things matter.-- black, blue, white and even green--lives matter. Your life matters too. You don’t eat right. You need to drink more water. Water is the lifeblood of the planet. And by the way, if people don’t start taking care of our planet, life will cease to exist. You need to think about going green.”

“Look around you, there are those who need help. Now, you get up and do something about it. You can make a difference. Are you getting the picture?”

Yes, Mom. I’m going to feed you some Miracle-Gro and cool you down with some fresh water. Get off my case. We’ll talk again soon.”
