Time Travel poetry contest entry
It's February twenty-eighth,
year Twenty twenty-one.
For decades I have worked on this
and finally it's done.
The time machine that I have built
is ready now to use.
I only get one shot at this
so wisely I must choose.
Plutonium is hard to find
but what it needs to burn.
I only get one chance to leap
and hopefully return.
The past holds many evil wrongs
that I could change for good.
If I could use it more than once,
assuredly, I would.
The future is another choice,
perhaps it is the key.
I'd gather crucial knowledge there
and bring it back with me.
For hours I weighed pros and cons
of where I'd go from here.
Priorities of mankind's fate
became defined and clear.
I stepped into the time machine
and typed the vital date.
I checked the seal and held my breath
and then clicked 'Activate.'
The quantimator hummed to speed,
in seconds I was there.
I exited the chamber door
amid the smoke-filled air.
I walked across my workshop floor,
my laptop still intact.
I turned it on and checked the date.
My landing was exact.
I searched the web and found the site,
the reason that I came.
An ad popped up across the screen.
This place was still the same.
I traveled time one month ahead
to find just where I placed,
to see if what I wrote for this
had won or been disgraced.
I headed to the voting booth
for what it had to say,
then came back in the time machine
the four weeks to today.
It seems I traded mankind's fate
and everything we've done
for just a prompt on traveled time
that I've already won.
