''Grandpa's story

by Willie P. Smith

Grandpa, tell us a story.
"So, it's a story you want, lets see.
I've got a story, I think you'll like,
It's about Uncle Bob and me.

It was Christmas Eve day, grandma said,
Boys, we don't have a tree.
Would you two go look around
And try to find one for me.

We saddled our horses and one to pack,
And headed out to find grandma a tree.
The weather was nice, the sun was shining,
It was clear as could be.

After riding for what seemed like hours,
A tree was spotted by Bob.
It was tall, round and beautifully shaped.
We thought it would do the job.

Bob said, lets cut 'er down
And fasten 'er on the pack.
We had ridden hard, both were tired.
The ranch was quite a ways back.

On our way home, the wind picked up.
It got colder than an Eskimo's hut.
Bob and I hoped grandma would like
The beautiful tree we cut.

As we rode, the wind got stronger,
Then it began to snow.
The farther we rode, the worse it got.
Then the wind really started to blow.

The sky turned gray, then to black.
A blizzard hit us, you see.
It was coming down so hard and thick,
I couldn't see Bob next to me.

I reached out my hand and told Bob to take it,
To keep from being separated by the storm.
All I could think of was that pot bellied stove,
Grandpa lit to keep us warm.

We were wet, cold and completely blinded.
Then a bright light appeared overhead.
It lit the way for us to follow,
Then a soft, gentle voice said,

I'll be your eyes, I'll lead the way.
The path is lit for you to see.
The Lord has sent me here to help,
Have faith and follow me.

We followed the Angel until, the blizzard softened,
And we could see our way.
Bob and I will never forget
An Angel saved us that Christmas Eve day.

Grandma really liked her tree
And to our surprise
She threw her arms around our necks,
Then baked us three apple pies.
