The young and the old

Charlotte and Grandma

by Wendy G

~ Family Story (fiction) ~ Contest Winner

Grandma came to live with us when she was quite old.

She fitted in beautifully from the first moment, because of her gentle sweet nature. We enjoyed having her.

She had only been with us for a month when eleven month old Charlotte started to come for her special day each week with us. The two of them, the old and the young, bonded instantly.

Grandma was always there for her, keeping a watchful eye. Grandma helped her to learn to walk, steadying her. Grandma listened attentively to all her baby murmurs, never interrupting, never impatient. Later she listened to all Charlotte's little stories. Charlotte always wanted to be with Grandma whether outside in the sunshine or cuddling together inside.

Charlotte offered Grandma little cups of pretend tea with her pink plastic tea-set. She offered her tasty pretend food on the little teaspoons. Her little dolls kissed Grandma. Grandma's old, gentle eyes sparkled. Grandma had all the patience in the world for Charlotte – and she always had time for her.

Charlotte built train lines around Grandma, while she supervised. Grandma watched the trains going around, through tunnels, up and over bridges. Grandma took a great interest and delight in all that Charlotte did, and it was beautiful to watch the old and young together.

Charlotte did not mind that Grandma was grey and old. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Charlotte learned to understand and respect when Grandma needed to rest.

As time passed, it became necessary to help Charlotte prepare for the fact that Grandma would no longer be with us. Very difficult to explain to a child of now four. But she understood that God has a special place for each one, where they could be happy and free from pain. Grandma had become so much a part of our family it was hard to imagine our life before her, and we dreaded life without her gentle presence.

When the time came, to help our grief we decided to make a photo book of their special time together, Charlotte and Grandma - a book of memories so that Grandma would never be forgotten. We often look at the book together.

Did I mention yet that Grandma was our dog Honey?

Recognized

Some fictional elements, but based on reality.

Honey always reminded me of a grand old lady, regal in bearing.
She was almost twelve (about 84 in human years) when she came to us as a rescue dog, and lived with us for more than three years. She was mostly Golden Labrador with some German Shepherd and Ridgeback as well.
Dogs are also much loved members of a family.
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
