Before I Say Goodbye

To my dear family that I'm leaving behind,
I pray that this note will survive and that you'll know that in my final moments on this earth that you are in my heart and mind. The storm is raging outside and the bilge pumps aren't keeping up. I must have hit a log or some deadhead that was hidden by the mountainous waves. What a way to go huh?

Jan, you know that I loved you from the moment I saw you that first day of high school in Mrs. Felton's art class. You were beautiful then and you're beautiful now. I wish we could have celebrated our golden anniversary, we were so close. It does me no good in the time I've got left to apologize for the times when I was less than a stellar husband to you. Think on the many good times we had. Thank you for loving me.

Girls, I've not got time to address you all by name. Just know that I've loved you, each and every one. You brought so much joy to my life. It was fun watching each of you grow and develop into young ladies, wives, mothers. Tell your kids about me, but leave out the bad parts please. They don't need to know that grandpa could be hard to live with at times. I love you all, take care of your families.

Boys, I'd almost given up hope of having a son, when God blessed me with two at once. What a sense of humor. I want you to know that I'm proud of you both. You've tackled life with gusto and done things I could only dream about. Be men of integrity. Learn to control your temper; no good comes from an angry man. Divide the tools and guns equally, and sell the fishing permits. Check on your mom regularly, she's going to have a hard time for awhile. Love your families wholeheartedly, and give of yourselves to all that is worthy. I'll be waiting to meet you on the other side. Don't come too soon.

This note will be with me in the survival suit. Hopefully the ink will stay dry. Cremate my body and scatter some of the ashes back in Port Frederick, up near Neeka Bay. I'll be watching out over you all until we meet again.

You're loving husband and father.

This is of course strictly fiction, in more ways than one. Back in the year 2000, I was on a small commuter airplane. We encountered some severe turbulence and I started to pray that I wouldn't die in a plane accident. I know that I heard God tell me that I wouldn't. Buoyed by that remark, I prayed and said that I wouldn't want to drown or burn up either, and He said -"You won't."
Several days later, on the return trip, the plane I was in lost power and crashed into Lynn Canal. I'm here to tell about it. He kept His promise to me then and I believe he will continue to keep it. To this day whenever I'm in stormy weather on the boat I remember His promise to me and I take heart that I'll be coming home.
