Early gift ...

Love is the best gift

by Wendy G

My best Christmas gift ever is my gift for 2021.

Yes, I have it already!

"Mum, can I come over tonight? I want to give you your Christmas gift!"

"But we're in lockdown and you live more than five kilometres away! And it's August – far too early! Keep it for Christmas!"

"You must have it now!'" he replied. My usually law-abiding son arrived under cover of darkness.

We had been in lockdown for nearly three months. I was missing him and my daughter and the six grandchildren, (one just a young baby), very much.

My other daughter lived seven hundred kilometres away, and she was expecting her first in early September. When would I be able to see her baby?

"It's from all of us", he explained. "It's not available in Australia, and couldn't be shipped directly, so I had it sent to the United States, repackaged, and then forwarded on to me." I was intrigued.

Working busily as he talked, he explained.

"It's an Aura," he told me, "A digital photo frame, but all three of us can post our family photos remotely on it – for you to see them immediately. Each photo stays on the screen for ten minutes – they shuffle randomly all day and evening. We've all added photos; there are 400 already. You had to have it before Lucy's baby comes. You'll have new photos every day! We'll keep posting too."

Such a blessing to feel so connected, cared for, and loved.

An equal blessing to know so much thought and planning together had been going on for nearly three months!

That's what made it the best gift ever!

Love it! Love them!

Can there be any greater gift than the gift of love?

Best Gift Ever writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
Write a story about the best Christmas present you've ever received. It may be an actual physical gift or an emotional experience. 100 - 300 words.

(291 words)

Fortunately my son was not caught outside his zone.
We were all double vaccinated, and he was working from home, meeting no-one, so there was little risk - but we are responsible for obeying the laws of the land, and I don't believe he has ever even had a speeding ticket before. But he was willing to risk a significant fine, so I could have the gift before the next baby came, and to make sure I knew they loved me and were thinking of me.

How precious.

Lock-down continued for more than another two months. Travel restrictions to country areas eased in November, when I met my seventh grandchild, a beautiful boy.

They all continue to post photos, and message me when they do, saying "Look now!" as there is a feature which enables them to ask for the photo to be shown immediately. I am enjoying daily my gift for 2021.
My gift of love.
