A true friend, it doesn't matter who, or what you are.

A chapter in the book For Children

Gerry Giraffe and Ellie Elephant

by Sandra Stoner-Mitchell

Children's poem Contest Winner

Young Gerry Giraffe was out walking alone,

with no friends to run with, no chums of his own.

The other giraffes told him they wouldn’t play

they said he was clumsy and sent him away.

When Ellie the Elephant gazed at the sky

to watch all the birds that were flying so high.

She wished she could join them and not be alone

she'd just like one friend that she could call her own.

Now one of the birds who had been flying by

had spied both the creatures from up in the sky.

She saw they were lonely and had an idea,

she'd bring them together, and fill them with cheer.

She flew down and told the giraffe he should come

to a place that she knew where he’d find a chum.

Now Gerry was happy to follow the bird

and that’s how the oddest best friendship occurred.

Though Ellie and Gerry might not be the same

their friendship would always forever remain
