A visit to the historic prison. (350 words)

Cell Number 273

by LisaMay

Jimmy suggested to his friends that they go on a night tour of the historic jail. “Let’s see how those criminals lived when they were locked up a century ago.”

Angela was reluctant: “There might be ghosts. Terrible things happened in those cells.”

“And it serves them right! Ghosts, eh? Even more reason to go!” Tracy responded with ghoulish fascination.

“Some of them were probably hanged!” Zac danced around clutching his neck, jerking to make the others laugh. Jimmy and Tracy joined the macabre dance.

“Stop it! Stop it!” Angela was not impressed.

Nicole thought it’d be interesting to go. Against her better judgment, Angela agreed, but only if her boyfriend held her hand the entire time they were there. Benson hadn’t said anything during the conversation. He looked very uncomfortable, but agreed to accompany Angela for the visit.

The following night, the six teenagers arrived at the prison by 8.00pm, ready to begin the guided tour with several other people. Their moods ranged from devil-may-care bravado to hesitant curiosity. Angela clung to Benson. Their docent was a knowledgeable older man, who delivered the facts and figures with little embellishment as they walked the grim corridors and peered into claustrophobic cells.

“This is too boring,” muttered Zac to Tracy. ”Let’s spice it up.” Jimmy joined them; they slipped away from the group and sneaked into another corridor, intending to get ahead of the docent’s group and jump out to surprise them.

The passageway narrowed and darkened. Cell numbers glowed eerily in the dank gloom. They heard despondent moans coming from one of the cells. Tracy and Jimmy faltered, bumping some railings on the wall. As the railings clanked, a trembling, withered hand reached through and touched Zac’s shoulder beseechingly. He screamed and broke free. Eyes on stalks, hearts in their mouths, they fled back to the group.

“I see you found cell number 273,” said the docent disapprovingly. “If you’d waited, I would’ve told you the stories about that corridor.”

“That was probably my great-great-grandfather,” said Benson with sorrow. “He was wrongfully imprisoned, and eventually committed suicide in that cell.”

Minimum of 300 / maximum 350 words

Author Note:
Not all who are jailed deserve to be there, especially a hundred years ago when legal representation wasn't always available to the poor. Through being wrongfully imprisoned, maybe Benson's great-great grandfather's spirit was broken. He felt he was in a hopeless situation and killed himself, but his spirit remained stuck in the cell.
