Checkout Cheryl and Charlie

by LisaMay

From her position at the supermarket checkout, Cheryl scrutinised eligible young men while scanning their groceries. She hoped to enjoy some banter with them, but they were all either too pushy or too serious.

She’d been asked out a couple of times; however, Cheryl was left unimpressed. One young man took her to a fancy restaurant, where she couldn’t understand the menu and didn’t enjoy the meal. It was just an expanse of white plate with artistic smears and tiny pieces of unidentified food on it. When she’d gotten home she’d raided the fridge to appease her hunger. She actually preferred dinner parties at home anyway.

Another young man gave Cheryl a huge bunch of exotic blooms. She’d never been given flowers before, so she didn’t have a vase for them. Also, the scented lilies made her sneeze, making the gift a problem rather than a pleasure.

Cheryl had been intrigued for a while by another young man. He shopped at the supermarket more and more often, sometimes only buying one item of fresh, healthy food at a time. He always came to her checkout and always had something nice to say to her. He wore silly masks, but she recognised him because of his lovely smiling eyes and warm voice.

Over a few weeks he became more and more friendly, though still remaining somewhat shy. Cheryl knew his name now, and with a thrill of anticipation she sensed this could be the start of first love for both of them.

One day she was stacking shelves with canned vegetables and packets of dried fruit. A shelf suddenly collapsed and crashed to the floor, sending items in all directions. In an instant, Charlie was by her side to help.

“I’ve bean waiting for a girl like you.” Charlie laughed, handing her one of the cans of runaway baked beans.

“Wanna date?” asked Cheryl, giggling as she showed him a packet of dates. They ended up rolling in the aisles together when he stepped on one of the cans and fell over.

“Let’s go home to my place for dinner. I’ll cook a chicken stir-fry,” he suggested.

“Yes, let’s!” Cheryl quickly agreed, then pulled off his elephant trunk mask and kissed him.

On their next date, she was delighted when he gave her a single red rose and a crystal vase. "Oh, Charlie, you are my darling,” Cheryl sighed lovingly.
