The Prospect

by prettybluebirds

I'm not for everyone, for sure. I'm seventy-six years old and set in my ways. Plus, I am a committed cat lady. Recently, a man I have known for some time stopped by, and our conversation went something like this.

"April what are you looking for in a man? What would I have to do to get you to consider marrying me?", Riccardo asked. "My wife is dying of cancer and I'm looking at prospects."

Prospects? Geez, how flattering. Riccardo is a handsome Spanish-American, but I'm not too interested in being someone's prospect.

"I'm not looking for a man; I'm quite happy as I am," I answered. "Besides, I have six cats and a dog to consider. They are all pets and live in the house. I noticed you flinch when Blackie gets close to you. Could you put up with six cats in your home?"

"Yeah, I guess I could learn to live with it."

"You guess? What about Blackie? He's a friendly cat, but you act like he might attack you or something. Cats know if a person likes them or not, and believe me, they would let me know if you mistreated them."

The cat in question, Blackie, gave Riccardo the stink eye and climbed onto my lap.

"Well, uh, I have always considered black cats to be bad luck. I wouldn't hurt one of your pets, though. I know how much they mean to you. I'm sure I could get used to them eventually." Riccardo eyed Blackie nervously.

"They sleep with me at night too. Before my husband passed away, at least two cats and a dog slept with us every night. They still sleep with me." I'm beginning to enjoy the conversation. "Could you handle that?"

Riccardo squirms in his chair. "There wouldn't be any room for me, but we could get around it. You can have one bedroom, and I will sleep in the other. Do you think that would work? The animals can stay with you at night."

Okay, I decided I better quit picking on the poor man. I didn't want to hurt his feelings because he is a good friend and helps me when I need it. I have acquired a strange sense of humor in my old age. I'm not too impressed with the prospect business, but I can let it go.

"Riccardo, I thank you for your offer, but as I said, I'm happy the way things are. I realize it would be a lot to expect any man to take us all on. I appreciate the things you do for me, consider you a good friend, and you are welcome to stop and chat anytime. However, I intend to spend my remaining days alone caring for my pets. At my age, I'm not interested in a man anyway." I thought that should slow him down. "It would be best for you to look for a younger prospect who still likes sex."

"I always admired you even when your husband was still alive. I wish you would give me a chance," he replied.

I had to admit that he was persistent.

"Riccardo, it's not going to happen. Who knows, maybe your wife will recover and come home before too long. Anyhow, let's leave it at that and remain friends."

"Okay, if you insist, I suppose I have to. You are still on my prospects list, though. I have to go now but will stop by next week, and maybe we can talk about it some more."

I shook my head as I watched Riccardo climb into his truck and leave. That man could never survive life with my menagerie and me. Besides, he should not have asked me to marry him while his wife is still alive. My opinion of him dropped several points. As I mentioned, I'm not for everyone. It would take a bonafide cat person to put up with my feline family and me.

On a happy note, Riccardo's wife is better after stem cell treatment. She is back home so I don't hear much from Riccardo now. It is kind of a relief; the man was becoming a pest. Lol She clipped his wings and put a stop to his prospect list.
