Celebrating the end of Ramadan

Fast then feast

by Wendy G

Allah, we try so hard to fulfil
What we believe to be your will …
We have fasted, and we've prayed
From our beliefs we have not strayed.

We commit ourselves into your hands
As we try to meet all your demands.
The fast of Ramadan is long
But we want to please, and not do wrong.

We swap our day routines to night,
And work much less – helps us to fight
Temptations strong to eat some food
Which for our faith would not be good.

So from dawn to dusk you know we fast
Submit our will, so we can last …
But one month later we all meet
To feast on special things to eat.

Eid El-Fitr we celebrate …
To break this fast we are not late
We eat dates first, traditionally –
A symbol of peace and hospitality.

A special day and we rejoice
That we have listened to your voice
We thank you for our annual fast
Now this year's Ramadan has passed.

While we lived in a Muslim country, we made sure that we did not cause offence by eating in public during Ramadan, or anywhere other than our home.
(We are not Muslims, although I have tried to write this from a Muslim perspective.)
Muslims fast during the month of Ramadan, not eating any food between sunrise and sunset. This annual fast is one of the five basic tenets of Islam.
Those who are taking part eat twice a day, before sunrise and after sunset. They often worked shorter hours in Saudi Arabia during Ramadan, because of the extreme heat and diminished energy levels.
Dates are high in natural sugars and potassium, and restore depleted energy levels, so they are often eaten after sunset before the meal.
After Ramadan finishes, dates are also the first platter offered, before the feast of Eid El-Fitr celebrating the end of Ramadan, a joyous occasion.
