Creativity in the Community

If I Had a Million Dollars Contest Winner

Dear Phil Anthropist —
(I made inquiries to find out your name so I could address you personally.)

Due to your kind offer, I am sure you will be besieged with an abundance of distressingly needy personal situations. Life is difficult for many, with unemployment, ill health, homelessness, poverty, and wellbeing issues, so any bequest by you would no doubt improve many suffering lives immeasurably. However, my suggestion has a different focus for how your generous offer of funds could be directed.

Modern life has become preoccupied with digital devices and programmed entertainment. Also Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) subjects are being prioritised to the detriment of humanities-based ones. Art should be accessible to all. I fear for our hands-on creative future — with your help, I want to reclaim imagination and the discipline of achievement within an arts-based framework.

I propose that an Arts Centre be built, with workshop studio rooms as well as performance and exhibition spaces. A sculpture garden would be included in the design. Quality tutors and mentors would be attracted as educators, and a sound administrative structure established. Annual Scholarships would be offered, a condition being that a work produced during the term is to be auctioned or performed to raise funds for a charity. Let’s spread the good will and the benefit of your money!

Knowing you are a busy man, I will keep this brief. I can explain more details about this project if you care to contact me. I hope you can see from my vision that I am sincere and committed to this project. Your money would not just be for a short-term flash of generosity, but would enable creative minds to blossom, to learn skills and share their talent, while ultimately benefitting the wider community by having cultural impact. Expression and meaning enhance our lives, beyond mere survival.

Creativity is a source of wellbeing; this project would provide direction and satisfaction for many practitioners, which would in turn have a positive impact in our community.

I wish you good luck in making your next million dollars, and I assure you the million you put towards a proposed arts centre will be money well spent (and also provide a good tax write-off, haha).

Thank you for considering this project for your generous bequest,

I. M. Artist
