"George, George, wake up. I think there is someone in the house. I heard a noise downstairs. It sounds like someone is in the kitchen. Maybe you should check it out."

"Mmph, what? Why do you wake me up when you know I have to be at work early? It's probably one of the cats. I left the door open a crack because Blossom was still outside. Now leave me alone and go back to sleep."

George, my wonderful husband, and protector, hmph. Well, maybe he's right. I fluff my pillow, pull the covers over myself, and try to continue my interrupted sleep.

I start to doze off when I hear a sound like something falling. I won't wake my hero up this time. I will check it out on my own. It most likely is the cats as they love to sleep all day and carouse all night. I need to go downstairs and close the door George left open anyway.

I step into my slippers, put my robe on, and head down the stairs. The noise came from the kitchen, so I go there first. What I find strikes terror into my heart; panic floods my veins. It is a nightmare no one should have to face.

The cats are all on the counter, hair on end, staring at the intruder who is standing in the middle of the kitchen floor. I back away as slowly as possible while the intruder watches me closely. He seems as startled as I, but he has a weapon, and I don't.

I inch toward the door and open it wide, hoping the intruder will take the hint and depart. Things might get ugly if I try to force him to leave. If he decides to use his weapon on us we will all suffer dearly. I can only hope he shows us mercy and decides to leave peacefully.

The intruder apparently decides there is nothing worth stealing, and besides, there are too many witnesses. He gives all of us a disdainful look and calmly walks out the door.

I slam the door shut and lock it. It takes a few minutes for my heart rate to return to normal. I wipe the sweat off my brow and thank the Good Lord for saving us.  If I even could, it would have taken days to get the odor out of the house. It was a close call for the cats and me. A skunk is never a welcome visitor.
