The Little Big Dollar Store

by Boogienights

I remember growing up in 1960s Chicago and spending time with my dad.
We didn't have a car, but that didn't stop us!
I specifically remember taking two buses to get to the downtown area from our southside neighborhood, on the way to our favorite place.

"The Little Big Dollar Store" was a magical place for a six-year-old.
It had everything you could possibly want, but particularly, it had these small plastic dolls
dressed in beautiful gowns and hats.

The first time I saw them I immediately fell in love.
They all came in different colored gowns and stood in their own plastic carrying cases.

Every time we went to this store, my dad would buy me one of these dolls.

I didn't understand it at the time, but it must have been a sacrifice for him to spend what little money we had on those toys.

We barely had enough money for food in those days, but each time we visited the store I always left there with one of those little dolls, a testament to my father's love for his
little girl.

I still have one of them, although her face is cracked and her gown is a lot worse for wear.
Before we caught the bus back home, he'd bring me to the penny candy store and we'd leave with a small paper bag full of wonderful, sweet treats.

Cradling my small hand in his big one, we walked back to the bus stop and headed for home.
My father was a gentle giant with kind eyes, who never had a bad thing to say about anyone.

This, to me, is one of the best memories of my dad. Even after all these years I still think about it and relive the joy.
