Creation

“Can it hear us, Father?” Little Mercur’s antennae quivered as he asked the question.

His father, Shylur, shook his larger head. “No, Mercur. Not unless I flip that toggle on the central control desk."

Little Mercur nodded, grinning from his lower mandible. “And, can it see us?”

Shylur patted his son’s head (it would be two more years before the second would develop) with his long twig-like appendages. “Absolutely not. It is most important for the experiment that that does not happen. We cannot go through a catastrophe of that nature again!”

“How many experiments have you carried out now, Father?”

“Let me see, I believe this is number 42.”

Shuffling away from the central control table on leathery hooves, Shylur paused by a laboratory bench and peered through a large microscope.

Mercur trotted over to join him. “What’s in there?”

“Another Umon… a mate for specimen A.” Shylur chuckled.

“Can I make one?” Mercur asked.

“I’m afraid not, little one. I only need two of them.” Shylur took the dish from under the microscope, shuffled back to the main table and began to unscrew a small hatch set into the back of the large orb floating above the central control table. Looking down at his disappointed son, he added, “Maybe next time.”

He tipped the dish and let the contents slither off and into the globe.  As he began to screw the panel back into place, he whispered, “There you go, Adum, this is Evf. And, remember, be good.”
