Berating Bad Driving

by LisaMay

I barely escaped with my life today —
I’ve been dodging bad drivers along the way.
Is he drunk as a skunk? Has she taken a pill?
They’re young or they’re reckless; some over the hill;
they’re blind as a bat, or they want a cheap thrill.
I hurry on home so my blood doesn’t spill.

Why is a red light an invite to speed?
But now they go slow: ‘Move aside!’ I plead.
That one’s coming at me, she’s in the wrong lane:
‘Get over, you idiot — don’t cause me pain!’
I slam on the brakes, then my car’s in a spin.
She cruises right past, wearing a grin.
Put down that cellphone, don’t text and drive,
or more of us victims won’t get home alive.
They weave in and out, and they don’t indicate…
don’t know where they’re going until it’s too late.
One’s close to my tailpipe, wanting to pass;
he’s honking his horn, the impatient ass.
Now it is dark, and it’s raining as well;
there’s a car without lights like a bat out of hell!

Though I yell and I swear this is driving me mad,
I've just realised my own driving is bad!
Why does that driver shake his fist at me so?
Oh, I see, it’s a green light, I guess I should go.
I was thinking of words, writing a poem in my head.
I probably should have stayed home instead.
