Flowers rhapsody

by Iza Deleanu

I always remember the day when I got lost in this non-sense story. It was June 28 and somehow the year was erased from my memory... I stepped out of my house going to work, and then everything was erased so quickly that the only thing I remember was the sun and the smell of sweet flowers, maybe it was jasmine or maybe was something else. I wake up holding my left arm and screaming: "oh, no! It's broken. Somebody? Helpppp! I can't stand up on my own."

I still remember the agony of that hour. I was lying on a field of multicolor flowers. Birds and bees were going about their business, but I was stacked to the ground fixed on the blue sky and prisoner of the enchanted field. I realized that I was on my own and if I wanted to survive, I must crawl out of my misery, man up, and get to the closest road and find help. I managed to get on my knees and using my right hand I pushed myself up. Trembling, I managed to get up, and what I saw took my breath away. A rainbow of colors was melting my perspective of escaping this field. I was trapped between the azure of the sky and the white, yellow, green and red of the flowers. There was not a tree in sight. What I thought was the bee, was a sound that was cutting the middle of the field and was reverberating in this melody of a water falling on a pitcher, and yet no water in sight.

I was used to be on my own, but here I felt helpless. Cradling my arm from the elbow I encouraged myself to move on. I stood and listened... and there it was, a small interruption to the whooshing sound. That's where I needed to be. I felt that if I get closer to the source, I will find my way out and somehow, I will be saved. It was very hard to advance, because the flowers were not growing evenly. At the beginning I've tried not to disrupt their beauty, but then I become eager to get out of here, so I lost my concentration and started to stomp on them. My heart was bleeding on the massacre happening under my feet, flowers falling left and right as I was trying to get closer to the origin of that sound. I felt like a predator and start mumbling to myself:" divide and conquer... here I am destroying these beautiful flowers to save my skin! Arrr, so typical! I am the unleashed beast killing nature in its awakening. God, please forgive me. I never wanted to be here... just show me the way. I need to get out of this post-card. I'm feeling so sick, these flowers are making me dizzy... and my arm hurts so badly!"
As I was approaching the point where I felt that there was a brief pause between the pitching sound, I noticed for a brief second the contour to the entrance to a cave. I decided before I will jump to the unknown to test the "water first." I picked up a hand of soil and throw it inside the shape when there was that small pause between the sounds. The soil disappeared but was throw back at the next pulse. Maybe the soil was not something good enough. Next, I picked up a bouquet of those mysterious flowers I murmur a little thank you for your service prayer and said:

"I am offering you these flowers in peace, please grant me safe passage, I mean no harm" gently I put the bouquet at the entrance of the shape.
The sound pauses for a second to accept the offer and then restarted the whooshing cycle. After ten minutes the sound stopped and a voice said: "Your offer was accepted, step in and follow the light." I had no choice but to do as I was told. After spending what seemed like an eternity in this mirage, I was curious to find what was there to explore some more. I hold my broken arm close to my chest and cautious I've stepped in that cave. The moment I stepped inside the cave the entrance disappeared and a beam of light in front of me guided my steps as promised. By now my arm was pulsating, and the only thing I wanted was to see a doctor and do something about that arm. I never had a broken arm before, so I was desperate to get medical attention. As reading my mind, the light encircled me and for a second stepped down around my arm, as magic the pain disappeared, and my arm snapped back in position. I start moving my arm in front of my face and start screaming like an idiot: "I'm healed, thank you, Lord!"

The voice amused said: "I was called lots of things, but Lord, never."

Smiling I answered: "Sorry, I don't know who you are and why I am here but thank you for healing my broken arm. I am in your debt forever. I know sounds crazy, but can you tell me... why Me?"

The voice answered: "Because you smelled the roses, that's why you are here."
Doubtful I whispered: "I smelled the roses? When have I done that? Oh, no, me and my bad habit to kiss the dew on the flowers from my garden... yup, I smelled those red roses that were full of an unearthly perfume, and now I am going to meet the beast. My weakness for the flowers got me in trouble."

The voice heard my whisk and laughing answered: "Roxanne, you are not here to be punished but rewarded. We love your innocence and the joy you find in spending time with your flowers. We never saw a human to love flowers so much. You are here to get to know us better, and who knows maybe you will be our protector back in your world."

"I've been called many things... bitch, whore, stupid... but protector? I guess I can add this to my collection of noble... titles? So, yeah, one protector in coming at your service, my Lord. Tell me how I can help?" As I was speaking, I noticed that I was out of the tunnel." Oh, kill me now, another field of roses!" True to my habit, I run searching for the magic kiss tears from heaven, the dew.
The voice started to laugh, "This is so YOU, Roxanne. We hit the Jack Pot with you. You will make a wonderful ambassador for my cause."

"Wonderful, but what's the program, and what I'm supposed to talk about?" When I turned around in front of me was staying the most beautiful... prince. "Oh. No, so cliché. Why are we so stupid, we see a man and wow... Prince freaking Charming, don't look, but I am melting now."

"Roxanne, please take this message back to your people: "We the flowers protect your realm so stop killing us. If we are no more your planet will disappear. Flowers equals life."
"Sure, prince, I will be your Greta Thunberg and hopefully I will get more luck than her in achieving the saving of my planet."

Prince Charming: "Roxanne, I don't know who Greta is, but you are more qualified to win this battle. I know my choice cannot be wrong."

"Okay, Sir I will do my best. And this is how dear children I started to write about my favorite things in this world, the flowers."

"Mommy, mommy this is so beautiful."

"And now children are you ready?"

"Yes, mommy."

"Is the guard looking?"

"No, mommy."

"Okay kids, let's dig in. Remember, be gentle with the flowers."

"We will mommy, the dew is so gooooooooooood."
