The Monkey Show

My grandparent’s home was on a dirt road a mile from the little town where we lived. They had no car, so they seldom left home. When I was five-years-old, they heard about a man traveling around with his pet monkey putting on little shows. They decided I would enjoy seeing a monkey.

It was a beautiful summer night with a bright moon. As we walked on the dirt road to town, I was so excited. They had never taken me anywhere before. Walking on the road at night was an adventure. I laughed and skipped all the way to town.

A circle was marked off in the middle of a parking lot, and people stood all around the edge watching the show. The monkey wore a red shirt and blue pants and little cap. He rode a tricycle tipping his cap to the crowd. Next, he and the man tossed a ball back and forth. Then, the man threw a soft ball and he batted it. Like a child, he did everything the man told him to do. He stood on his head and turned summersets. He was so funny I couldn’t quit giggling.

This was during WWII and Hitler was the leader in Germany, which our country was fighting. The man asked the monkey what he would do if he saw Hitler, and he ran and found a toy gun and pretended he was looking for Hitler to shoot him. At the end of the show, the man played a tune on an accordion and the monkey danced. Then, the monkey got a bucket and started going around to people in the crowd. As people put money in the bucket, Grandpa gave me some coins to drop in. The monkey tipped his cap to everyone who gave him money.

Later, as we walked back home, I couldn’t stop talking about the monkey. I was anxious to tell my mom and dad about the show. I’ll never forget the night I walked to town with my grandparents, and got to see a monkey for the first time.
