The Sparrow

I walked along a path one day,
beside a quiet waterway.
Watching the autumn leaves float down,
beneath the trees, to cover the ground.

The wind was bitter, it whistled low,

a warning given of coming snow.
My heart felt sad and lonely too,
so lost I was in thoughts of you.

When suddenly I happened to see,
a sparrow in an old oak tree.
My heart warmed up at the sight,
my spirits lifted, my soul felt light.

Though winter loomed, quite plain to see,
the sparrow kept giving its song to me.
I sat there listening for a while,
hearing his notes gave me a smile.

I Wondered how he came to be here,
with winter snow so very near.
No answer for it, he continued his song,
but soon night fell and he moved along.

Flying away from the old oak tree,
singing a goodbye song to me.
I bid farewell to my little friend,
and continued on my way again.

But in my heart his song was ringing,
always to remember the sparrow singing.
