Final Bouquet

The night was dark, the shadows danced,
was something bad afoot by chance?
The heavy footsteps heard behind,
made me nervous, perhaps a sign?

The evening had a lovely start,
a man I met who had my heart,
we went to parties, they were grand,
he gently kissed me, held my hand.

Exciting, our new love affair,
we walked, but soon, he wasn't there.
Did he become too tired of me,
that he decided then to flee?

Left all alone, as shadows danced,
a bitter end to our romance.
The footsteps though still followed me,
I looked back quick but couldn't see.

A chill soaked through my flesh and bone,
with fear as heavy as a stone.
A pounding heart, eyes filled with tears,
when would the footsteps disappear?

Then suddenly, my love was there,
the moonlight shone upon his hair.
I saw the blood drip down his face,
I flew into his cold embrace.

Some flowers in his hand I knew,
along the cliff's edge always grew.
He handed me a small bouquet,
then slowly turned and walked away.

They found his body down below,
the cliffs where wild flowers grow.
He loved me 'till the very end,
he was my lover and my friend.

The flowers, crushed, rest in a book,
now and then I'll take a look.
His footsteps I still hear it seems,
the scent of flowers invades my dreams.
