Do you play the game?

by Wendy G

The following is a story written by a dog called Sunny, for the Animal Crackers Club prompt about a board game he would choose to play.

Good morning! The sun is shining today, so I have just been for a nice long walk with my Mama.

This evening, I am inviting a few friends to play a special board game with me. I am starting an international club, and any pets who would like to join in may do so later, but tonight's guests will show how the game is played.

Penny, will you be there? It will be morning for you. Buddy? I think you will still be on yesterday's time. Sam, are you still at Paul's place?  Benny? Will you join us? Okay, let's have some fun … join me in Australia for the Bluey Scavenger Hunt Game!

Have you heard of Bluey and her sister Bingo? They are Australian Cattle Dogs (similar to Kelpies), otherwise known as Blue Heelers. They are animations on television, and have books, several games, and a lot of memorabilia in their honour.

Their role is to keep young Australian children entertained, as well as curious and active – and their older humans too. Even my Mama plays – you should see her run! Paw-some!

It's easy and fun for all ages. You need to be able to count to six, swipe a spinner with your paw, and move a counter with your nose.

We each have a counter shaped like Bluey, Bingo, or their parents, Bandit and Chile. If everyone comes tonight, we can use extra counters shaped like their cousins as well. We flick the spinner with a paw to see how many spaces to move, and proceed around the board.

There are four different piles of cards (Play, Surprise, Think, and Find) with different activities, plus the Toy Box. That keeps it exciting.

If we land on a square that says to pick up a "Play" card, we might have to spin around five times, hop on one foot, do five star jumps, or act "like a granny". If we can't do it, we miss a turn.

If we land on a square which says to pick up a "Find" card, we might have to find something shiny, or purple, or precious, or sparkly, and so on – before the hourglass timer runs out. Your "something precious" might even be a bone!

So if your human complains about any of these activities, you will just need to say that you are competing in an important international board game. Of course, if you want to do these things at other times, you can just say you are practising for the next game. You may well become a famous international champion through this game!

Who is the winner? It's the one who is furthest from the start when it is "Bedtime". There is a small circle section in the middle of the board with only six squares which lead to "Bedtime" (otherwise known as "the end"), and a community token. If, when you are going around the board, you land on a square that indicates you are tired, or need to sleep, you must advance the community token, not your own.

When the community token hits "Bedtime" the game finishes. So don't land on those squares when you are having your turn! If we can avoid bedtime, we can go around the board several times, even maybe stay up and play all night. We don't have to go to work tomorrow, like our poor humans, so we can sleep in.

Are you ready to play? Sam, you are the oldest, so you will get first turn. There has to be some advantage to being the oldest!

Seven o'clock tonight, Australian time. Yesterday we moved to Daylight Savings Time – ask your human to figure it out on their device. They're all sure to have a device. It's the "in" thing for humans - it's like a toy for them.

See you this evening! May the top dog win.
