I Love you because of ...

An Affair to Remember

by Tom Horonzy

To every man with a pulse, I ask,
have you ever met a tease?
A woman that flaunts and taunts
in a way that makes your day,
unaware what she was doing
was the reason for her being pursued?

This happened to me some years ago
as a frat brother brought a beauty to the house.
Subsequently, he drank to excess, leaving
that peach abandoned nonetheless,
affording me opportunity, means, and motive
to prey upon her eminent sweetness that night.

Making my move across the floor, I left my brother
with a impending headache and nothing more.
I, being wise beyond her years, had a recipe
that would win the night and draw her near.
I asked for a dance, to sweep her off her feet
selecting a rhythmic song, sensual and deep.

Never in a million years did I foresee the result
of my master plan having me become entranced.
The blue of her eyes, the smooth of her cheek,
with hair so soft it enhanced her mystique
that I could not, would not rid from myself
for months and years and ever after.

And thus, love blossomed in my heart, even tho'
a cold wind blew across the Oaks, chilling me.
I searched as I walked, hoping to find her presence,
assured her warmth would engulf the essence
of every fiber of my being like chestnuts roasting
on an open fire, reducing goose bumps to toast.

I became further endeared and fully twitterpated
when I caught a scent of Shalimar on a path I treaded
which led to windowed silhouettes in a girl's dorm
with but one form capturing my interest. Hers,
which was petite and as compelling as the apple to Eve
in the garden, becoming totally credible to me.

My dreams became restless yet pleasant as her smile
radiated like moonlight through a bedroom window.
I envisioned a vision in white, on a summer night,
with her on my left believing, all would end right
if she would only date me once, to assure her
a marriage between us would surely endure.

Fate entered in, on a frigidly cold night, with a call
from a 'brother' of a different mother needing help.
A fantasy comparable to the Prince and Cinderella
began when my beloved got kissed by another fella,
which I imagined would be me, but questioned if
she'd go, not knowing she'd been passed on again.

The stars aligned, and despite the awkwardness,
she agreed to dinner, and if that went well, to a dance
in ruby slippers, a strand of pearls, and a flowing gown.
It did, which led to an affair to remember forever before
In-Sync became popular, and long afterward, as we
matrimonially became each other's king and queen.

Writing Prompt
A poem about your significant other.

The story is true. I was chapter advisor to immature frat boys who wouldn't see gold in a quartz nugget, which ended up being great for me.
The picture is of the wife and I, June 1979.
The Oaks was the entranceway to Presbyterian College, having elder oaks be sentinels to arriving guests.
