The Real Artwork

I'd love to write a work of art,
that many folks would read,
that doesn't need a picture's aid
to tactfully mislead.

My words would be the helmsman's wheel
that leads the soul or heart.
I'd need no fancy font nor ploy
for thoughts my words impart.

Beneath the depths of mind and sight
where verse is what I seek,
assistance 'top one's crafted work
would stain too crassly bleak.

Yes, pretty colors catch the eye
in magical display,
yet trade the words for shine and show
instead of what they say.

Perhaps one day few more shall see,
and twain the two apart,
then realize a truth beheld...
that writing is the art.
