Just a glass and she was...

Trading Places

Mary carefully opened the trunk up,
in her Auntie's old dust-covered attic.
She had passed away two short weeks ago,
she'd collected junk like a fanatic.

Newspapers, figurines, magazines...
creepy dolls were stacked up by the score.
And Mary was tasked to start cleaning
the attic, from ceiling to floor.

The trunk lid creaked as it opened,
inside an old bottle of wine.
It was her Aunts top secret recipe,
she removed the cork and it smelled fine.

No telling how long it had been there,
Mary thought that she might have a taste.
Her parents weren't due back till later,
She could sample the wine without haste.

She found an old glass with some dishes
and wiped off the dust with her shirt.
Poured half a glass of the liquid,
leaning back on the cobwebs and dirt.

It burned just a bit as she swallowed,
she finished and poured one more glass.
Her Auntie knew what she was doing,
it was so much more potent than grass.

Then Mary felt suddenly achy,
and her eyesight began growing dim.
Her hearing as well started failing,
the walls around her closing in.

Mary tried with great effort, to stand up.
In the cracked mirror hung on the wall,
she saw an old woman's reflection,
not looking like herself at all!

She screamed as the glass dropped and shattered,
a young woman, behind her, appeared.
She looked a bit like her old Auntie
but quite younger, the whole thing was weird.

Mary looked at her hands which were wrinkled,
The young woman said, "Dear,  don't feel blue."
"I hope you don't mind switching places."
"I'll live life again over, as you."

Then Mary woke up in the coffin
that had contained her Aunt two weeks ago.
Mary's withered hands banged loud against it,
but there was no one around who would know.

Her Aunt put the cork in the bottle,
in her backpack, she hid it away.
She'll keep it till this life has ended,
put to good use again, come that day.
