Woke Up Sad

by Bill Schott

When the eyelids drape my orbs,

this sad world spins on without me;

I'm still here but unaware

of all the things I did not see.

Through the walls, across the way,

my neighbor struggles with the thought

of whether he should kill himself

with a pistol he had bought.

Up the road a teenage girl

has new life within her womb;

too afraid to ask for help,

her mind aligns with dread and doom.

Across the world, each day that ends

takes with it a weeping soul;

invisible to me depart

leaving nothing but a hole.

That hole contains a tortured shade,

which no one saw behind that wall,

which could have been released to light

if anyone had seen at all.

Two lives alone within a home,

surrounded by a family,

fade away as fears erase

two innocents I could not see.

Again I wake and see the sun,

active dreams all fade to nil;

a morning yawn inhales a world

darker, shocked, and sadder still.
