Well,This Isn't Good

by T B Botts

In my mind I could hear Ollie speaking to Stan.
"Here's another fine mess you've gotten me into. MMMPHH!"
The thing was, this wasn't funny. I felt like taking my hat off, scratching my head and crying like Stan did, but what good would that do? We were in a bit of trouble here. We needed to cross to the other side of the creek, but the recent rain had caused it to swell and we had no floatation devices. We were in bear country without a gun. How stupid! From somewhere behind me I heard cubs crying. Oh no!

I used to love watching Laurel and Hardy. In such a situation, they might have shown up at the end of the show with just their hats intact, leaving me laughing hysterically. However bears are no laughing matter. Never go out in bear country without some form of protection. The sows are very protective of their cubs. You can't outrun them. The best thing is to make lots of noise and let them know you are around. If you have something they want, let them have it and back away. The best thing you can do is pray. Bears are unpredictable.
