Long Things

by Heather Knight

Your grandma's pearl necklace
that she wore on her wedding day.

A crystalline river through a forest
rushing impatiently towards the sea.

A silky yellow ribbon
that ties a little girl's hair.

A winding path among the trees
where lovers walk and kiss.

The branches of a willow tree
that almost touch the ground.

A giraffe's never-ending neck
that at night reaches the sky.

If you string all these things together,
then what do you get?
You get a poem made of drawn-out lines
and a weird assortment of objects
you don't know what to do with.
Maybe you can use them
to teach the meaning of long
to kindergarten kids.
