The Problem With Porridge

by Debra White

I place it in the microwave
and hope, for once, it will behave
but like an effervescent elf,
my breakfast can't contain itself.

So quickly up the bowl it grows,
then froths and bubbles, overflows -
That sticky puddle, full of lumps,
so quickly dumps me in the grumps.

(Every. Single. Time.)
