A Life Disrupted

My heart is filled with sadness,
there's not one day that goes by...
That I don't hurt for Erik,
though I try hard not to cry.

His mental illness took hold,
shortly after high school ended.
Into a schizophrenic world,
is where his mind descended.

Fear of darkness in the walls,
many voices soon took hold.
"What do they say?" I ask him,
but the truth is never told.

Meds keep him on an even keel,
still, his life will never be
just the way a mans life should.
He will never be set free.

He can't work, the voices reign,
I'm so sad for what he's lost.
Like independence, freedom,
unfulfilled life is his cost.

My heart is filled with sadness,
mental illness took away...
Life, as it once could have been,
with a mind in disarray.
