Why Jesus Sweat Blood

by Deniz22

The Bible tells us Jesus prayed three times in the garden of Gethsemane, sometimes prone, and once even supported by an Angel from Heaven, lest He die before He got to the cross.

He was denied even the fellowship of His beloved, yet weak Apostles. He struggled in prayer, seemingly each of three episodes more agonizing than the last. Luke, the beloved physcian, repors His bloody sweat, indicating His extreme distress.

It was the first trickle of the blood of the Lamb of God, to be joined by that of His scourging, beatings and then culminating in the gushing blood and water released by a soldier's spear after His death.

Jesus, unlike many a person who dies with no idea what happens at death, knew He was going to "become sin for us". The Scriptures tell us Jesus was tempted in every point, just as we are, but never sinned in thought, word or deed. He was sinless at birth, because born of a virgin by the power of the Holy Spirit.

It was in this manner the Word, the Second Person of the Trinity, also became a real man, yet without sin. He came to save us from our sin and implant in us a new life like His!

Yet the only way this was possible was to pay our HOLY GOD for every single sin ever committed, save one. Those who reject Christ, God's Son, must pay with their soul forever, lost and condemned, never to be redeemed.

This is the sin against the Holy Spirit which Jesus warned had no forgiveness in this life or after life.Essentialy, this damning sin is calling God the Holy Spirit a liar when He testifies Jesus Christ is Lord.

God, the offended One, set the price for offences to His Holy, righteous character:the life  blood of a sinless human being. And then in an act of Divine love beyond our comprehension, He offered for us His only-begotten, BELOVED Son to pay our debt in full and thus be restored to the sinlessness of Jesus Christ.

When we trust Christ as our Savior, we are born-again, receiving our new nature made in His sinless image. This new, pure person, who cannot sin in God's sight, becomes the forever home of the Holy Spirit, ensuring our eternal salvation and making Heaven our Home!

There was one other factor in this plan of God's for redeeming a world of lost sinners. The sacrifice must be holy, utterly without sin, and also WILLING to offer Himself freely to the cross and all such giving entailed. This is the hallmark of a true sacrifice to God; it is not of constraint of any kind. It is not to gain salvation or Divine favor. LOVE, pure love, must be the ONLY motivation of any service to God, big or small..

There can be no question Jesus loved God, His Father. And there can be no question Jesus loved sinners, and yet He was also human. Would He be willing to die for us sinners? Haven't men bravely died for their country? Or families? Or even a friend, even a worthless one? Yes they have, without question. But would anyone be willing to go to Hell for another?

Understand, it was not the enlightened anticipation of the beatings, the spitting in the face, the hard fists of the soldiers, the mockings of the maddened crowds, nor the accusations of the highest Jewish authorities which caused Christ's soul and spirit His  tortured  distress.

No, it was His knowledge of Psalm 22's prophecey of His twin deaths, spiritual and physical, the first being the real cause of His bloody sweat. Jesus knew He would be treated by God like the worst of sinners, even though He was the best of men.

For the first time in His sinless life, He was going to experience the complete withdrawal of His Heavenly Father's Divine Presence. You and I were born not knowing God, but the scripture says of Jesus in Psalm 22:9: But You are He who took Me out of the womb; You made Me trust while on My mother’s breasts. 10 I was cast upon You from birth. From My mother’s womb You have been My God.

Psalm 22 opens with the agonized cry of a man abandoned by God: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
It is no coincidence Jesus cried these very words on the cross! What millions have never missed because they have never known, the sweet PRESENCE of HIM who is LOVE personified, Jesus knew and felt immediately God's withdrawal of Himself! And with a spiritual soul intensity which no nails, beatings or human scorn could ever induce or replicate!

Standing in the stead of a sinner, He could not then address God as His Father as He did formerly. No, now bearing our sin on His sinless soul, He must acknowledge God as God, something the hardened athiest claims he will never do.

For Jesus, every second apart from His Father was an eternity in darkness, alone. But at LAST comes the victor's cry, "IT IS FINISHED"! Full atonement for all sin (save one) has been accomplished by the Father giving His Son and by the Son giving Himself for all and realized by we who believe!

Summing up: the victory of Calvary was won in the garden of Gethsemene by the Saviour on His face in prayer to His faithful Father. We know from scripture that Jesus did not have to go to the cross. Here's what He said to Peter after he attempted to rescue Jesus in the garden:

Matthew 26:52: But Jesus said to him, “Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels? 54 How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?”

Last comment: Jesus was not a victim nor under obligation to go to the cross but went with the two highest motives: love for all helpless sinners and love for His Holy Father.

Please trust Him to make you right with God as a brand new person today.

There was a woman who had a dozen children and one day, one of her sons was playing in some roofing tar. As she struggled to remove the sticky goo, she said, "Lord, it would be easier to make a new one than to clean this one up"!

God is not out to clean up your act, He wants to make you a new person through faith in Christ. Easter is a gre
at time to die to the old and start with the new!

Luke 22:41 And He was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw, and He knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, "Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done". 43 Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44 And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
