Luna's Tribulations

by Heather Knight

Luna stood still, her eyes bruised.

'How did this happen?' the emergency doctor asked.

'It was an accident, I told you.'

'So your husband didn't do it on purpose?'

'Of course not!' she almost shouted. 'I just need some antibiotic drops'.

When she left, the doctor looked sad, he'd seen many women like her. Unable to get out of an abusive relationship.

Outside, Treat was waiting for her. She ran into his open arms.

'They don't believe a branch hit me. They think it was you. Let's hope they don't call the police.'

And that's when they both started laughing.

On Thursday this week, my husband and I were in the garden, trying to cover the chicken fence that separates our garden from our neighbour's with something more attractive.

Part of the huge conifer that separates our plots had died and when I'm in the countryside, I don't like looking at cement-paved backyards. Our neighbour is lovely, BTW. This has nothing to do with him. It's his backyard I don't like.

My husband went first as, to tell the truth, I'm not very good at fixing things. He pushed a low branch backwards and then let go. And it hit me in the face. My eyes started bothering me and nothing I did seemed to make them better.

To cut a long story short, we went to the nearest health centre in the afternoon and they told me I had two little ulcers in each eye.

The doctor jokingly asked if my husband had done it on purpose. And that's what inspired this story.

My husband, luckily, is the gentlest man ever, but this story is for all those women who haven't been as lucky as I have.

The illustration is one I drew a while back. I took up drawing children's illustrations as a hobby in March, more or less, and it's a lot of fun.
