Derangement Personified

The Dark

by Tom Horonzy

Imagine me being in a box. A Vantablack box, which, is the darkest black. Yet, sitting here (though I could be standing or even laying) in Absolute Darkness, (how would I know) I recall (curiosity getting the best of me, what else can I do) Vantablack isn't a color at all, but a class of super-black coatings with total hemispherical reflectancy. That means it absorbs rather than reflects light. Its name is a portmanteau: a blend of two words. Smog is another combining  Smoke with Fog, like air over Los Angeles. (It could also be an acronym, right?) Vantablack is a substance of vertically aligned nanotube arrays in black.

Are you, whoever you may be following along, confused?  Let me try to clarify. Whenever (or is it wherever) a smaller font appears, it is meant to be the afterthought of an initial thought I had while sitting in The Dark. Unless you, the reader, have been in a similar predicament, you cannot imagine how doing anything but thinking is possible. I cannot find a pen or paper to write my thoughts, and I am also concerned about where the T.P. is, not to mention where to put my bottom, as I know not where bathroom might be.

Additionally, the only sound heard herein The Dark is a hum. (At least whoever caged me thought of supplying air.) I also feel a breeze. I think it is from above (or am I standing on my head,  meaning the fan might be below, though I could be on the horizontal.) I simply - DO NOT KNOW.

Dazed and crazed is my schedule today, though it might be night. I wish I had a friend in The Dark, which births another thought... can words that are spoken be heard at all? Maybe I am not in a box at all but a void beyond the known universe where there are no stars, or sunlight yet. A place reserved where God can create additional universes.

To end I ask you to consider what you would do if stuck in THE DARK.

The Dark writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
Write a story where your character is stuck in complete darkness. Fiction only.

Taking the lead from the Outer Limits teevee program, I confess I was not in control writing this piece. May the Force return to me in future renderings, having me return like MacArthur to the Philippines.

It was a challenge to create a black box with white lettering, but finally found the solution. I mean what picture could convey THE DARK better?
