In a place different, my brother and I walked thru
city new, bundled up, for exploring is the goal
Tropical tree leaves lure eyes upward
catching thru our corneas wonderful
Varied wavelengths of light
After many steps on snow strewn sidewalk
We stepped into Des Moines history museum,
warmth a relief to the face
Wonderful wealth of history, fascinating to the mind
Our eyes explore the vast flora feast, as do others strolling too
over stone paths and arched wooden walking bridge and
up rough cut stone stairs to a view grand, garden sprawls out
After getting snacks at Mexican Grocery store we go by
State capitol grand, for green and gold domes, crown it
Beside it, we traipsed thru snow to see up close, a monument tall and appreciate
statues and words carved for Union soldiers and sailors
Sun having set long ago we make, way to our temporary home
past people enjoying food and bartender serving up libation
As we made our way back to the sidewalk I had an idea! to jump the road verge, snow piled high
I landed with a knee to the concrete, surprisingly making a hole thru both pants and base layer
My brother looked on disapprovingly, snow caked to his shoes
As we exit the event, glass doors swing shut behind us, I wish I
could stay, soak in the warmth and write this, but no
Into the dark we go, having explored a conservatory and more
Gloves put on or hands shoved in pockets, hat and
hoods pulled down against the cold,
We go down sidewalk, more than foot high snow flanking
Try? I won't, to jump another snow bank today.
