He beat the kill shelter

Mister

by Eternal Muse

I saw you sitting in your cage
So lonely, frightened yet demure -
I felt the pangs of silent rage,
as death had
webbed its icy lure.

But I stood guard and conquered death!
You'll get to live your life in full.
Please pray for me, as you draw breath -
My little darling, justice ruled.

So beautiful, buff color fur -
The shelter said you're very sweet.
Named "Mister", or in French "Monsieur,"
One day I'd love for us to meet.

Sweet angel, you will be set free -
That's pretty cool, don't you agree?

A sonnet in iambic tetrameter.

For years I was involved in saving animals on death row.

It was fate when I saw this cat on death row in Michigan municipal shelter - see his picture above. I was endeared by his name, Mister. Mister's owner died and he went to a relative with two big dogs who did not like this cat. So, Mister was brought to the shelter and put on death row. His last day would be Wednesday, February 10, 2010. I contacted the local rescue and pleaded for his life. He made it! Mister was pulled out of death row on the day he was scheduled to be euthanized, and taken to his foster home, from where he was subsequently adopted.
