As a latchkey child, I can feel for both child and parent

Latchkey Child

by June Sargent

How does it feel around your neck
beneath the pretty sweater?
Must never lose it, always check
in cold or sunny weather

Inside the fridge some snacks you'll find
You shouldn't be in danger
Be sure to lock the door behind
and never trust a stranger

If troubles taunt and you're in fear
just summon next door neighbor
She'll hold you tight, no need for tears
She knows how hard we labor

Providing food and clothes and toys
You'll surely understand
Life never offered me a choice
I do the best I can
