Left To Fend For Myself
Disappointment

The author has placed a warning on this post for language.
I was down by the lake on my way back to the ranch after work. As I was taking the shortcut around the lake I heard someone holler, "Wait up."
Stopping, I turned around, and looked back. It was my neighbor's son Jason.
"Wait up," he said, as he jogged up alongside me on the path. "Where do you think you going?"
"Really, Jason, is that any way to greet a person?" I scolded him.
What ever happened to,"Hi, How Are you?"I asked.
"Thought you were a trespasser," he says chuckling.
"Well?" I said.
"I'm sorry, I was kidding, I didn't really mean it," he said." Let me make it up to you?"
"Oh!, What did you have in mind?" I asked.
"Well, I hate to eat alone." Jason said.
"Would you let me do the honor of taking you to supper?" Jason asked.
He was such a handsome cowboy and the love of my life growing up. I had such a crush on him all through school. He still had quite away with the ladies, I had been been warned.
He was two years older than I, and he was trim and fit, a prime specimen with his blue eyes and rugged features. He had told me last time I saw him he was not the settling down kind of guy. He was a lone wolf who liked his freedom. It has been fifteen years since I saw him because I was away from the ranch. Today was my first day back.
I managed to say to him in a quivering voice," I'd like to have dinner with you."
We agreed to meet at my place around seven and we'd go to the diner by the lake. Finally making my way to the end of the path I was at my place. I checked my mail and the box was overflowing with magazines and a few letters from friends.
Seven o'clock Jason was at my house knocking on the door. Opening the door I stood there amazed. He was dressed in a soft black western tailored fit suit and tie. Wow!
I said," I can't believe you are here."
Jason said,"Come on or we will be late and I am starved."
"Bring a jacket. It will be chilly by the time we leave the restaurant." Jason reminded me.
I was having a good time with him despite my nervousness; We ordered some ice tea while we decided what to order for supper. I excused myself and went to the ladies room.
Jason was wondering to himself while I was gone, "what was I doing back in Montana? When I had left the first time he had wished me well. Now though he wondered what I was up too? Why was I back at my ranch? Was I going to stay this time?"
Looking down at his watch he was beside himself. He was late for a meeting. He'd plumb forgot about it.
When I got back to the table Jason abruptly got up and said," let's go." Whatever we had shared was long gone. I sighed quietly, it had been a lovely time out while it lasted. I was silent as we left the restaurant for awhile then I turned to him and asked."Why we had had to leave right then?" I wouldn't go out with him ever again and told him so. "I didn't know if I should be angry, hurt or what?"
He started muttering and cursing, "I'm suppose to be at a meeting right now!"
Suddenly my phone rang it was Jason's Dad, asking me if I seen Jason? I told him I would pass his message along if I saw him. We said goodbye and hung up.
Jason said, "I've done it now, the old man is going to be really pissed."
Turning to me he asked sadly, "Can you get a ride home? If I leave right now I will barely make it to the meeting?"
I told him go, "don't worry about me! I'm used to taking care of myself."
He said, "I will call you."
I said,"Don't bother"
I turned away from him and went back inside the restaurant and ordered myself a simple meal. I pushed my plate away, the meal half eaten. I was no longer hungry. I called a cab to take me home.
Setting out on the back porch I was disappointed. My first day back was miserable. I felt lonely for the first time in a long time. I have never been brushed off like this ever. Looking up at the mountains I remembered how I used to love to ride up into the hills to clear my head. I just might do that come morning. Oddly enough, I began to relax and enjoy the rest of the evening. Maybe tomorrow will be a beginning of a new day full of adventure.
