Goodbye To Love

I reach for you,
sprawled next to me,
taking up most of the bed.
The covers kicked off carelessly,
I think about the things you said.

About how familiar I've become,
how our passion died long ago.
I think you thought that I'd agree,
I couldn't, because I love you so.

You thought maybe we'd take a break,
find out what more the world could hold.
You said it very casually,
I watched our love turn dark and cold.

So many years we shared our dreams,
a future that had been so bright.
I guess it wasn't what it seemed,
and now I face an endless night.

Your bags are packed,
your sweatshirt on,
the one that spells out MIT.
I found it in a second hand store,
so thrilled when you got this from me.

"Now everyone will think I go
to MIT and think I'm smart",
You laughed then as you took my hand,
Your gentle touch melted my heart.

And so you go, no kiss goodbye.
No call you later, see you soon.
All things of yours have disappeared,
your scent though, lingers in this tomb.

I wonder if you found someone,
with whom the passion never dies.
Or will familiarity breed contempt?
as you cheat on her and tell her lies.

She waits for you in the car outside,
her eyes downcast, she fears my glance.
She need not fear, I pity her.
I don't think that she stands a chance.

I reach for you,
and you're not there,
no longer taking up the bed.
The covers kicked off carelessly.
I think about the things you said.
