The Past Came Calling

Behind The Unlocked Door

She didn't lock her door Contest Winner

The author has placed a warning on this post for violence.
She didn't lock her door
and that was a mistake!
Her ex lover walked right in,
who caused so much heartache.
He took her fragile ego,
and crushed it neath his boot.
So much of what he said he loved
about her rendered moot.
She heard the doorknob turning,
as both feet hit the floor.
Then she saw him standing there,
looking like he did before.
Memories came flooding back,
desperation, hurt and shame.
She felt the bruises that he caused,
from blows that used to rain...
down upon her when his anger,
fueled by alcohol,
tore her soul to pieces,
as she watched her whole world fall.
She thought he might still love her,
sure she saw it in his eyes,
that he regretted what he'd done,
the abuse and all the lies.
But then she took a closer look,
and knew that she was wrong.
She knew that he would never change,
she had to remain strong.
He walked over and took her hand,
a smug look on his face.
Then he walked around her home,
as if he owned the place.
"I thought we might share one last time
before I go away."
"A brand new life awaits" He said
"I leave at break of day."
"I knew you'd want to say goodbye,
I'm just thinking of you."
"I wanted to mend fences
before the night is through."
He led her to the bedroom,
where so many nights she cried.
She couldn't forget about him,
no matter how she tried.
Now terrified and helpless,
she lets herself be led,
while shame erupts inside of her,
she wishes she were dead.
His first soft kiss awakens her,
she knew she'd soon be lost.
She had to get away from him,
no matter what the cost.
All at once her voice turned sultry,
all her fears she put aside.
She said "I'll pretty up for you."
She felt him swell with pride.
He thought that he still had her,
trapped underneath his spell.
Soon she would be beside him,
thought he knew her, oh, so well.
She slipped inside the kitchen,
wrapped her hands around a knife.
One of a new set she had bought,
guaranteed sharp for life.
She paused for just a moment,
and wondered if she could.
But she thought about the beatings,
then she knew for sure she would.
As he reached for her when she returned,
something was in her eyes,
a fiery determination,
that took him by surprise.
Too late he saw a glint of light,
reflecting off of steel.
The first blow and the smell of blood,
made his senses reel.
Feelings she had inside of her,
that had festered up till now.
Came ebbing out with every blow,
releasing her somehow.
When it was all over,
everything as it was before.
She smiled, now free of her old life,
because she forgot to lock her door.
