Famine in Sudan 1993 : as photographer Kevin Carter was taking the photo of the staving child a plump vulture landed nearby .
Carter had been advised not to touch the victims because of disease so instead of helping he waited 20 minutes in the hope the bird would fly away .. It did not . So he scared it away and then watched the child continue towards the aid centre.
Carter won a Pulitzer for this image but the darkness of that day never lifted from him.
A year later (July 1994) Carter took his own life ,writing , I am haunted by the vivid memories of killings & corpses & anger & pain.
