Their future is bleak as deforesting in Borneo and Sumatra persists to make room for paper and oil palm plantations.
Female orangutans give birth about once every 6-8 years. Infants stay with their mother for six to seven years, until they have learnt the necessary skills to survive on their own. During this time a special bond is formed between mother and child.
In the last 20 years more than 80% of orangutan habitat has disappeared . We are loosing over 6,000 individuals a year.
