Separated from my twin.
Solo on the Mountain

It’s lonely here. I can’t see anything either, and brrrrr it sure is freezing without a hand to hold. I love the feeling of fingers snuggling together. My sense of isolation is overwhelming in this white void.
I fell off and no-one noticed. They all just continued on up the mountain chair lift and left me lying here below. I took a tumble and slipped down the icy slope and now I can’t move by myself.
Even my twin went ahead without me. Until now, we’ve always been really close – together through everything. Right at the start, when we were brought home, we spent most of our time tucked up together. We are inseparable. We aren't identical twins as such; it's like we're a mirror image of each other. She's right-handed and I'm left-handed. It just doesn’t feel right to be apart.
I recall how we spent all our past winter holidays: the fun we had hauling the toboggan up the slopes, then later learning to ski together, gripping those poles first in apprehension then with more relaxation. And now this! I’m beyond feeling anxious; this is terrifying. I hate being separated from her. If I’m not found soon, it scares me that we might never be reunited.
They must be worried about where I am by now. Surely they will have seen I’m missing? Come back for me! Come back for me! I don’t want it to end like this – lost and all alone. But I have no voice to call out. It’s so cold, and the snow is beginning to swirl in flurries. Perhaps there will be an avalanche! Perhaps I will be totally buried. Perhaps a wolf will come and drag me away. Perhaps an eagle will come and pick at me, shred me to pieces. Please, no, no, no… my imagination is going on overdrive.
Now my mind is beginning to wander… I am on the slippery slope to oblivion. I am beginning to stiffen up. As numbness takes over, I have one last blurred thought: the fact I am colored will mean I stand out against the snow, so surely they will notice me? My candy-striped colors of a solo left-handed woollen mitten?
