Police Officer and Sorrow contest entry

Casket Rose

The ringing of the doorbell chimes
     woke her as she slept.
     After Captain Williams left
she asked me why I wept.

I picked her up and held her close
     until the rising dawn.
I simply could not bring myself
     to tell her Daddy's gone.

I made the painful funeral plans
     the next day afternoon.
I gasped for breath when Lindsay asked,
     "Will Daddy be home soon?"

The hardest thing I've ever done
     were words that needed said.
To tell my precious baby girl
     her loving father's dead.

An officer that gave his life,
     a fate too quickly met.
Who loved us both with all his heart,
     a bond we'll not forget.

His comrades proudly stood and lined
     the cemetery lawn.
She placed atop the casket lid
     the rose she cried upon.

A year has passed and many nights
I rock her off to sleep.
I see his face within her eyes
     and silently I weep.
