A tribute to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice

Lest We Forget

by Earl Corp

This memorial poem,
Is for heroes who didn’t come home,
They make not a sound,
As they rest in the ground,

This should give you pause,
They died fighting for a cause,
The Brave and the Bold,
Never to grow old,

Because German subs,
Sank some of our tubs,
Brought us to the fray,
To make the Germans pay,

In World War One,
America sent their son,
To whip the Hun,
Not all came home when done,

At Pearl Harbor there was a Hullabaloo,
So we entered World War Two,
From island to island we leapt,
Japanese rule we wouldn’t accept,

War raged in Europe,
Leaving people without hope,
Once we landed in Normandy,
Defeat was inevitable for Germany,

People hoped there’d be no more war,
They didn’t see what’s in store,
Combat was as bad as before,
 Korea was the Forgotten War,

Vietnam created a fuss,
Peace protests divided us,
As many will attest,
We sent our brightest and best,

Saddam Hussein we did hate,
When he invaded Kuwait,
A coalition did form,
Then Bush unleashed Desert Storm,

Terrorists tested our powers,
By flying planes into the towers,
We defeated the Taliban,
Over in Afghanistan,

On the desert sand,
We made a stand,
Hussein got no slack,
When we went to Iraq,

Respect to the living who served pay,
On November 11, Veteran’s Day,
For the fallen please say,
Thanks and pray

It may seem small to you,
Memorial Day people say thank you,
This honor should be reserved,
Only by the fallen is it deserved.

Once I started with this one, it was hard to stop. I know the meters suck and the rhymes aren't tight. But I wrote it from the heart, where all good poetry starts. Enjoy and be kind.
