Yeti Breath

by LisaMay

The mountains crack and boom.
The bruised air vibrates
and shudders a sigh of regret.

Our crampons bite rock;
in a frozen realm, snow poles probe deep.
Climbing nearer to God, the sun-split glare
shines on the waiting snow –
waiting to let go, softening,
but heavy as the unloved heart.

His hand raised in a permafrost greeting,
the dead climber on the cliff,
frozen where he fell,
absorbs the prayer wheel’s message
creaking in the breeze
while spinning its supplications.
The mountain will keep him
gripped to her chill heart.

Flags flutter: life’s a circus under cirrus.
Our remnant prayers are tattered pennants.

Tendrils curl on his forehead
above his ice-rimmed, unseeing eyes.
The blizzard will come soon enough –
he saw the sunshine in his youth.
Under the icefall, the clouded hour draws near.

My camera is cracked;
brittle truth shatters in thin air,
needing oxygen to come alive.
I feel Yeti breath on my neck.

Mythical Creature writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
Write a POEM (maximum 30 lines) in any style, that mentions a MYTHICAL CREATURE, such as the Yeti, Abominable Snowman, Big Foot, Sasquatch, Loch Ness Monster, Unicorn, Bunyip, Taniwha etc.
Your poem doesn?t have to be about the creature specifically (although it can be), but its name must be mentioned in the poem.

Author's Notes:

1.) The Yeti, or Abominable Snowman, is an unproven legendary ape-like creature said to inhabit the Himalayan mountains. For the people indigenous to the region it is part of their history and mythology. Stories of the Yeti first emerged as a facet of Western popular culture in the 19th century.

2.) This poem was inspired by recent news of the loss of life in overcrowded conditions while climbing Mt Everest, the world's highest peak. As a New Zealand resident, with an interest in Buddhism, I have been fascinated by the Himalayan region for many years, and have visited Nepal. Our national hero, Sir Edmund Hillary, was the first to summit Mt Everest in 1953 (with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay), and until he died in 2008 was instrumental in developing many schools and hospitals in the region. I am so pleased he got off the mountain alive.
