My Time With A Turtle

by LisaMay

The sea’s sun-dappled surface is shining.
I slip into the soft, silken blue
that caresses with its touch.
Submerged, my gaze alights on you.

A turtle! A creature mysterious.
How lucky am I to be here
in your underwater realm
to witness you swimming so near.

With a gentle stroke, so smoothly,
the water could be air
as you steer with wing-like flippers –
and all I can do is stare.

How close will you let me approach
as you glide through the water?
You turn, and I sparkle pure joy,
feeling like Neptune’s daughter.

Your carapace colours are varied
and marbled to blend with the reef.
The teardrop-shaped shell
is a comment upon your grief.

The water’s polluted with plastic;
a horrible fact, that is true.
You’re a symbol of good luck and longevity:
I do hope it holds true for you!
