Desperate

by Heather Knight

Ever since I was a little girl, I knew what I wanted my future to be like.

I would get married and have children. I would love them dearly. I would be nothing like my own abusive mom and perverted step-dad.

When I was sixteen, I left home. I couldn't take any more beatings. I needed to start afresh.

I found a job in a diner and a cheap apartment. When I first saw it, my heart sank. There were roaches everywhere, even in the bathtub. But after a weekend of bleach and air-freshener, it looked almost decent.

Two years later, I met Ian. We went to Spanish night classes at the same community college. We both wanted the same things from life.

We soon moved in together and started trying for a baby. Nothing happened. Every month, disappointment would wash over me. In the end, we decided to go to the doctor's. It turned out I had been born without Fallopian tubes.

For a while, I prayed every night. I asked God for a miracle, but nothing happened.

I was so desperate, that I changed my tactic. I started having long conversations with the devil.

'I just want a baby.'

'That's easy for me. But what will you give me in exchange?'

'Whatever you want.'

'Give me some time to think about it...'

A month later, I missed a period.

My pregnancy progressed without a hitch. Ian was happier than I'd ever seen him. I worried about the devil and my promise to him, but not too often.

And then, the long-awaited day came. My water broke while I was having a shower. I wanted to scream, but I couldn't. Something was very wrong. The liquid wasn't transparent as I had been taught to expect in my antenatal classes, but dark and slimy.

I got dressed and told Ian to drive me to the hospital.

'How are you?' he asked.

'I'm good,' I said, trying to hide my misgivings.

As soon as we arrived at Saint Michael's, I was wheeled to a delivery room.

The doctor said it was going to be quick.

Ian held my hand.

After a couple of pushes, we heard a wail, an unearthly sound that made me think of a caged beast.

'Here he comes,' the doctor said, sounding bewildered. And then he fainted.

Ian walked towards the foot of the bed and I sat up to look at my baby. What I saw broke my heart and brought a scream of anguish to my throat.

The baby had red eyes and was covered in scales. Instead of gurgling, he hissed at us.

Just then, the door opened and the devil came in.

'I've come to collect my dues.'

And that's when I realized I had been tricked...
