A Free Verse for the Senses Contest

Down Memory Lane

by June Sargent

Scents have a way of conjuring up deeply imbedded memories,
sometimes happy, sometimes sad ones.
The nose never forgets what stirs the heart,
like the aroma of chicken soup - how it awakens memories
of mom comforting me when I caught a cold - I miss her.
Or, the scent of leather - how it makes me smile
as I remember sitting and reading with dad
in his favorite chair before bed on Sunday nights.
I take a deep breath now and then to see
where on memory lane the scents will take me.
