The Runners

by RodG

Cross-country teammates, each with dreams,
they push themselves right to the brink.
The ocean always on their left,
they lope for miles, no rest or drink.

Pete's swiftly running with the pack
on tide-washed sand hard as cement.
The only frosh on varsity,
he's number four, but not content.

"Now let's sprint home," the captain said
on dune they'd climbed in single file.
Though his legs burned, Pete poured it on.
He finished first in world class style.
