Reflections

by Boogienights

They say that the eyes are mirrors to the soul.
By looking at my reflection I find,
a person looking back who's not quite complete,
missing pieces that my heart once enshrined.

Missing is the faith in my fellow man
since all that has happened has caused me grief.
Gone is the hope for a future that's bright,
violence reigns now, I can see no relief.

Politicians say what we want to hear,
depending on who they are telling it to.
Celebs make statements then apologize,
aren't they aware that's the wrong thing to do?

Defending the flag, how can that be wrong?
Freedom of speech is still in place I think,
yet chaos and fear are ruling the land.
With destroyed businesses pushed to the brink.

If eyes are really the mirrors to the soul,
then in the mirrors of my fellow man I see,
sadness and fear, or anger and hate.
I look at my mirrors and see that in me.

Will a time come when we all get along?
When people of color don't have to fear?
I'm worried that this time will never arrive.
That these troubled days will remain, persevere.

Somewhere in my mirror, the answer lies,
in the face of someone who doesn't know,
how to change a country that's sadly on fire.
Still, into the flames, I'll willingly go.
